2086 Futurelympic Games Sketch

I've been thinking that it would be really fun to design some imaginary pictograms for the 2086 Futurelympics- like Otl Aicher's legendary designs for the 1972 Munich Games, and Nikolai Belkow's smoother updates for the 1980 Olympics in Moscow- so I'm gonna give it a try! You might even be able to tell what sports I had in mind with these cruddy sketches, if you squint really hard.

Can you think of any sci-fi movie sports that need to be represented or made up for the occasion? I definitely think Mecha-Basketball is in order. All the action and excitement of the NBA, mixed with the total radness of Robot Jox.

This moldy old book has seen better days, but boy what an awesome movie! I couldn't tell you how many times I watched my copy of The Wizard as a kid... on Betamax... taped off TV... but knowing that number could help scientists explain why I am the way that I am. Such a great cast! And as far as hour and a half long toy commercials go, I don't know if it can get much better than this.

I have a lot of vintage books- some in better shape than others- and I'm curious about what folks do with their older dust jackets. Like do you keep brittle, less-than-mint jackets on the books, or store them separately? I was reticent to ask, since I don't want the news that I know how to read to get out. So shh.

ps - Har har har! Tweed book jacket, he says! What an hilarious intellectual joke. I just so happen to be tossing around some interesting concepts for foldable school textbook covers, actually. And when they come out, we're all going back to school, just for fun!

Last week I was reminiscing about reading this book back in grade school, and I just HAD to have it. I loved the story of Koko and her kitten All Ball so much. I was so excited to find it in the mail today that I read the whole damn thing- like an IDIOT- even though I knew it had a truly sad ending. Anyway I'm just happy to have something I remember so fondly. "That chimp's alright! High five."

Almond Joy's got nuts, see, and Mounds doesn't. I tried my hand at a fun last minute candy-themed piece for an Uppercase Magazine call my friend Kate told me about, and it's makin me HUNGRY for coconut.

I'm an Almond Joy man, in case you were wondering. In fact, I think anybody who would actually prefer a plain old Mounds is nuts.

And the text is the awesome Ed Interlock from House Industries, which I modified a bit for my logos. I'm not crazy talented enough to dream up something so beautiful on my own (yet). The characters I fudged around, for better or worse:

Finally, an update! I know you still care, five months later. *crickets* I just don't get the free time to tinker around with my NES game anymore. Anyway, we've got moving platforms now! Isn't that exciting?! :D They looked easy enough to implement in the tutorial, but I've muddled up my code so much by this point that I had to start from the ground up. And the math was driving me CRAZY. It's a wonder I have a working demo to show you at all. But enough about me, how was YOUR day?

I'm glad somebody uploaded this amazing Japanese commercial for Dig Dug (which is one of my favorite arcade games ever (as you can see from my avatar (I know you care))), because it is the most wonderful thing to happen to my eyes and ears all week. I mean listen to that music! It's magical. :D

I've always wanted to design a paper toy, but I never had the GUTS to go for it. So I'm just gonna jump right in. I have no freaking clue what I'm doing, so I'll have to rely on already existing models and trial and error to show me the way. *tips over* Naturally this guy is lovingly inspired by memories of everyone's favorite learning robot, Alphie II, and I'm sure he'll evolve even more as I play around with the design. ROBO BOOGIE!

Anybody have any cool models to share? I know that Matt Hawkins is the baddest mama jama in the paper toys game, but that's about it.

Game Buddy "Cardboard Edition" Package Design for Attract Mode

I mentioned last week that I had designed some unique box art for Adam Robezzoli's brand spankin' new video game culture shop Attract Mode, but this is the first chance I've had to see the design out in the wild. He had this idea to hand print his mailing boxes to make them look like an old handheld gaming system, and I think they turned out FANTASTIC! :D I'm floored! And I can't wait to put in an order so I can get one of my very own.

Oh wait... but not really. So dig THIS! My friend Nate was watching some Thai version of "Real Housewives of America's Next Top Chef County" or something and spotted someone wearing a familiar looking design. When he realized that it was actually the characters from my unprinted but widely-loved "If It Lands In My Yard Again, I'm Keepin' It" design (printed on a pink shirt, no less) he snapped a picture.

"After viewing it from a couple different angles, I automatically knew WHO was the originator. Quickly thinking, greasy fried chicken hands and all, I snapped a picture with my Motorola iStartac phone and showed my buddy Mitch, who happens to be the artist of the original."

I know Thailand is the land of T-Shirt ripoffs, and it happens all the time, but we got a kick out of this one because it's not even a PRINTED design. That's it! :D

Aghhh! How fucking cute?!! :D If you could have seen the giggly smile on my face when I unwrapped this adorable little figurine from Kimby, my reputation as the baddest man in show business would be shot to pieces.

I don't know if you remember the monster I drew under the fabulous art direction of the even more fabulous fatheed (for our "Infamous Mishaps Throughout History" collab), but he was born around this same time last year. What a co-inky-dink!

It's so seriously awesome. I believe she sent another one to fatheed too. And as we all know, having the only surviving copies of a priceless statuette halfway across the world from each other makes them even more special-er. Thanks, sistah! :D I love it!

Lookit that tail and those little horns! :D And she even included the adorable little acorn who stars in my "Father Grows Best design. I smell a sitcom!

As the film update of the iconic 1980s TV series starts to take shape, Variety reports Liam Neeson is in talks for the role of cigar-chomping Col. John Smith—better known as Hannibal—while the Hollywood Reporter says Bradley Cooper has been engaging in post-Hangover talks for the Faceman role originally played by dreamboat Dirk Benedict.

The original NBC series was a romp about four falsely imprisoned Vietnam vets who bust out of a military jail in order to cruise around in a van, dress outlandishly and blow s--t up. The current update, which involves show creator Stephen J. Cannell, producers Ridley and Tony Scott and director Joe Carnahan among others, is said to be aiming for a more serious take.

Presumably, s--t will still get blown up. We love it when a plan comes together.

With Neeson and Cooper in the film's sights, the big question is now: Who has the gold chains, silver tongue and brass ballsiness to take over Mr. T's marvelously Mohawked role?

I probably don't have to tell you that this is one of my favorite TV shows of all time. ALL TIME! And with Laim Neeson and Bradley Cooper in the mix, I'm actually excited for a movie adaptation. Even though they will be taking a serious tone with the film, everything should turn out action-packed and a whole lotta fun- as long as they keep Michael Mann* out of the picture.

*I'm probably referencing that awful melodramatic Miami Vice movie. Remember that? I sure don't!

Imaginary Discovery Channel Logo Test (1984)

I thought it might be fun to compose some imaginary retro-fied idents for my favorite TV stations while I practice for a super secret project on the horizon. This one still needs more work; I was just too excited to hold back the INSPIRATIONAL musical cue I composed for it.

Up next: A colorful designerly logo for a 1960s FX? A simple black and white identification for a 1950s Lifetime Movie Network?! Nothing at all?! Who knows! We'll find out after these messages.

Finally! The long lost second book in the "I Can Read Movies" Series! I've been looking for this baby for the longest time, you guys. And believe you me, I had to pay a pretty penny to get it in such good condition. *gently seals in protective UltraPro bag*

No but REALLY, this was going to be the second book ever- right after Space Jam. I just couldn't get a handle on it, so I moved on to Highlander. What an EXCITING story! :D And don't forget, you can see the entire series in its own easy-to-use gallery right here.

Tetris Meets Spacesick!

I was playing Tetris and messing around with some new songs for my game today, and being the FAN that I AM I just had to see what they'd look like combined. Blah blah blah! I look like I suck at this game, but in reality, I'm a Tetris Master. I was intentionally building a little nook of blocks there so I could sneak some pieces into it all slick-like... but the video ends before I get to show off. >_< What a maroon! I guess that's what I get.

All new songs are mine. Tetris is obviously property of its owner - which was Electronorgtechnica last time I checked. ELORG TO THE MAX!

Woohoo! An update! I've been working on a lot of new features and enemies this week, and thought I'd show you guys this new miniboss system I've been trying. I've also been working out bugs one by one, and I KNOW there's some big ones in this update, so don't be afraid to mention stuff you find! Thanks, guys!

Thanks for all the help pointing out bugs and features you'd like to see, guys! Keep em comin! :D It might not look like much, but I did wanna share some exciting new updates for today (which took FOREVER to figure out, believe me).

- Water and Exit doors
- Super jump when you bounce off an enemy's head (try it!)
- Enemy goes POP! when you destroy it
- New health system and stat bar
- New enemy! I still wanna work on it some more though.

Things to work on as soon as I can:

- Extend the stat bar at the bottom
- A walking sound
- Tighten up various jump/enemy defeating glitches
- Continue working on the tiles and sprites
- Fixing the jumping error that occurs when there's only 2 spaces of room to jump

Hooray! Tomorrow I might take a break from all of this damn programming and actually draw something. Like maybe that little roller blading radish character up there. I know you care! I can see it in your eyes. *roller blades away*

New update today! I'm so pumped for this, guys. I can't believe I'm playing my own Nintendo-ish-esque-kinda-sorta game. The flashing part after you get hit was the hardest part so far, but I knew I wanted it bad enough to keep trying! Woohoo! :D

New in this update:

- Top of the screen now extends beyond visible area
- You can hop on an enemy's head to destroy it
- Removed the shooting feature for now
- Running into an enemy makes you lose health and bounce back
- If the enemy was heading in your direction, running into makes it turn around and go the other way
- You momentarily flash and are impervious to damage immediately after being hit
- Win screen
- Game Over screen

Shout out any features you think this baby needs, even if you've heard em said before. And don't be afraid to mention things that look off, or any glitches that you may find! Every litter bit helps. Thanks again, guys! :D

Spacesick Nintendo Game: New Update!

Well, here it is! As promised. Just a simple demo to show my newest updates. I implemented some enemies and the bullet feature that Tonypa shows in his awesome tutorials- but this is just temporary. I have big plans that could actually make this game fun and unique. BIG PLANS! :D

- Added an idle animation (wait a few seconds to see what he does!)
- Added enemies and game over function
- Added bullet feature (hit shift to shoot)
- Started working on some simple tiles and maps
- (edit) Just fixed that little flicker that was showing up at the bottom of the screen

Hey peeps! As potentially-embarrassing* as it may be, I put together a little sampler of some of the tunes I've been working on for my Nintendo game.
